    My statement on the tenth anniversary of PROMESA ⬇️

    "Ten years ago today, Congress passed the Puerto Rico Oversight, Management, and Economic Stability Act of 2016 (PROMESA) to address the island's $74 billion debt by establishing the unelected Financial Oversight and Management Board (FOMB), otherwise known as la Junta. Ever since, La Junta has functioned as the primary administrator of Puerto Rico's colonial state, facilitating the erosion of public infrastructure, healthcare, and schools to enrich Wall Street vulture funds and foreign investors on an unaudited debt. "The current crises on the island cannot be separated from PROMESA, FOMB, and the Board's mismanagement of Puerto Rico's budget. Right now, tens of thousands of Puerto Ricans do not have access to running water because of failing and underinvested infrastructure. Puerto Ricans suffer frequent blackouts and increasing energy costs while FOMB and the New Progressive Party cede public funding to corrupt energy contracts with NFEnergía, LUMA Energy, and Genera PR. Puerto Ricans are facing the widespread closure and privatization of K-12 public schools, increased university tuition costs, and diminishing accessibility of healthcare by leaving medical professionals with no other choice than to pursue opportunities off the island. "There have been bad-faith attempts to co-opt the hurt caused by PROMESA and return FOMB's authorities back to the government of Puerto Rico while still saddling the island with debt. These attempts to codify illegitimate debt should be resisted. The affirmative path forward for Puerto Rico must include: "Hace diez años, el Congreso aprobó la Ley de Supervisión, Gestión y Estabilidad Económica de Puerto Rico de 2016 (PROMESA) para abordar la deuda de 74 mil millones de dólares de la isla mediante la creación de la Junta de Supervisión y Gestión Financiera, también conocida como "la Junta" Desde entonces, la Junta ha funcionado como el principal administrador del estado colonial de Puerto Rico, facilitando la erosión de infraestructura pública, salud y escuelas para enriquecer a los fondos buitres de Wall Street e inversores extranjeros con una deuda no auditada. "Las crisis actuales en la isla no pueden separarse de PROMESA, la Junta y la mala gestión del presupuesto de Puerto Rico por parte de la Junta. Actualmente, decenas de miles de puertorriqueños no tienen acceso a agua corriente debido a infraestructuras defectuosas e insuficientes. Los puertorriqueños sufren frecuentes apagones y aumentos de costos energéticos mientras la Junta y el Partido Nuevo Progresista ceden fondos públicos a contratos corruptos con NFEnergía, LUMA Energy y Genera PR. Los puertorriqueños se enfrentan a la privatización y cierre de las escuelas públicas de K-12, al aumento de la matrícula universitaria y la disminución de la atención médica causado por los profesionales médicos, dejando la isla sin otra opción que buscar oportunidades. "Ha habido intentos de mala fe de cooptar el daño causado por PROMESA y devolver las autoridades de la Junta al gobierno de Puerto Rico, mientras aún se carga con deudas en la isla. Estos intentos de codificar la deuda ilegítima deben ser resistidos. El camino afirmativo a seguir para Puerto Rico debe incluir: • Anular PROMESA y poner fin a la Junta. • Terminar políticas fiscales corruptas como la Ley 60, que permite a inversores estadounidenses y extranjeros explotar Puerto Rico y cargar sus sistemas públicos sin contribuir a ellos.
