I had a very strong vision of a photo of a group of rodent people in a burrow all looking at the camera, and in the vision I knew that people were using the photo as a reaction image in a way that was disrespectful of the rodent people, and I felt very defensive of the rodent people

It's a funny one. YA as a marketing term, initially at least, targeted a sort of aspirational maturity, teenagers looking forward & seeing themselves on the cusp of adulthood. Whereas new-adult is looking backward, people in their mid twenties seeing themselves as just barely an adult.
