atproto has one big idea: apps should be lenses rather than boxes

this idea is still unknown to majority of internet users. even to the majority of web developers

we’re still at a phase where, if you explain it to someone, you can literally see it clicking for them in real time

i want to spread the word about atproto. if you’re running a podcast, i’d be happy to hop in to talk about it. i understand it decently well and can explain it without much jargon. it’s one of the most interesting developments in the last 30 years of web, and i can defend that. please dm to set up!

the thing that annoys me the most about the “we’d never do things like train our AI on your content” messaging is that it’s completely misleading

if anything, bluesky makes it easy for ANYONE to train AI on your content. it fights monopolies by democratizing access to public data, not by abstaining

and then [okay this is for old people; bear with me] remember the failed promise of web 2.0 with pipes and services talking to each other. this was fragile because each service can break the entire thing and has to expose API. here there's no API because we just aggregate from files. RSS was right

for example of interop benefit, look how @leaflet.pub, @pckt.blog and @offprint.app teamed up to use the same data format so subscriptions from one app work in all apps. and then @bsky.app added a fancy link card when a post links to data in that format

i use bluesky because it’s the closest thing to what i want on the unchangeable axis (topology) and the topology makes all other things potentially changeable over time

there is a pathway to the right thing from here. there’s no pathway to the right thing from twitter or threads or whatever

if you write an insightful blog post on a specific enough topic, and people link to it, you have a real chance at influencing everyone's llm output in a year or so. it's a bit wild

i think atproto pilled devs are much more forgiving towards bluesky as an app and give it a lot of leeway because they know apps don’t have the final say. so we kind of already live in a prefect app that doesn’t exist yet

whereas non atproto pilled devs see app as the final product. and bounce

How does it differ from straight up RSS and Mastodon, where is my identity being stored, how do I create a schema, what can be updated or modified later, is there going to be a PDS revolution, how does Standard.site fit into it all, and what else could we build with AT Proto?

again i don’t quite understand this because mathematics is fundamental.

the platonic voice in me says let’s see the undiscovered country! no one is poorer for having skipped a few thousand years of manual effort.

if there are infinite fundamentals let’s see a whole multiverse of math. why not?

it would be nice to have a blogged version of this. i think protocol devs shot themselves in the foot a little by calling it an AppView. "AppViews are expensive to run" sounds AppView-specific. whereas it's really "a backend for millions of users is expensive to run", which you just don't have to do

bluesky is in this weird intersection of

- text microblogging app which is slowly losing relevance as a format

- kind of a poisoned brand for ppl outside

- most “the web” thing there is. beautiful invention

- app still looking for its purpose beyond protocol demo

- real communities
