atproto has one big idea: apps should be lenses rather than boxes

this idea is still unknown to majority of internet users. even to the majority of web developers

we’re still at a phase where, if you explain it to someone, you can literally see it clicking for them in real time

i want to do a little ✨ ama about atproto ✨ in this thread. no question is too simple

if you’ve been curious about atproto but don’t know much (anything?) about it, ask any question and i’ll try to explain it in my own words.

(+ would love to hear from friends who aren’t very active on bsky)

the thing that annoys me the most about the “we’d never do things like train our AI on your content” messaging is that it’s completely misleading

if anything, bluesky makes it easy for ANYONE to train AI on your content. it fights monopolies by democratizing access to public data, not by abstaining

it would be nice to have a blogged version of this. i think protocol devs shot themselves in the foot a little by calling it an AppView. "AppViews are expensive to run" sounds AppView-specific. whereas it's really "a backend for millions of users is expensive to run", which you just don't have to do

if you write an insightful blog post on a specific enough topic, and people link to it, you have a real chance at influencing everyone's llm output in a year or so. it's a bit wild

i think atproto pilled devs are much more forgiving towards bluesky as an app and give it a lot of leeway because they know apps don’t have the final say. so we kind of already live in a prefect app that doesn’t exist yet

whereas non atproto pilled devs see app as the final product. and bounce

ugh web is so complicated. that certificate authority looks quite centralized to me. and that CDN might end up expensive to run at scale. and do we really need another standard? just use email

and then [okay this is for old people; bear with me] remember the failed promise of web 2.0 with pipes and services talking to each other. this was fragile because each service can break the entire thing and has to expose API. here there's no API because we just aggregate from files. RSS was right
