So, as of now, all we lost in threatened tariffs round 1 is the remaining good will of millions of people who live adjacent to our country and spend a ton of money on stuff we sell. Cool.

I stay up nights anguished about whether a comment I made at dinner was dumb and I spend my days viciously critiquing my pedagogy, my drafts, and my published work.

Meanwhile Bill Ackman thinks the Hamburgler is real and walks these streets bursting with self-assurance.

How long before Google maps adds an “ICE reported” option to its directions menu so people can warn others about highway checkpoints?

I keep hearing these takes on immigrants coming to the US bc of this or that feature of the US immigration system and I a here to tell you that this country's own residents don't understand its immigration system. No one else does either. People come out of necessity.

If New Year’s Eve was anticlimactic, may I suggest making a milkshake with leftover eggnog and your favorite premium ice cream. It’s blissful.

US folks are unprepared for what it will be like to not matter in the world. After we are done crashing around messing things up for others, we will sink into insignificance. MAGA will respond by saying that they don’t care, which is exactly what someone who has never felt insignificant would say.

I really really wish people would stop anticipating Trump voter buyer’s remorse with such certainty. This administration is their Birkin bag. They may come to see the price they pay as a sacrifice for the feelings it gives them.

When Trump said he didn't have the cash on hand, I was very worried that he actually had access to the cash he needed.

But now that he is telling the public that he DOES have (nearly) enough cash, I feel much more confident that he does not.

Every day more people who thought this would not affect them are learning that this is not the case. Still, not nearly enough people are learning quickly enough.

While there are reasons to note the fact that this person is a lawful permanent resident, it is not actually any less shocking or terrifying when someone who is not a lawful permanent resident is arrested and vanishes from all official records, leaving their family unable to find them.

I am routinely stunned by how much unnecessary or only marginally valuable work academics make for each other.
