Ugh, and now Guyon is talking to an ex-Microsoftie who - imagine - is gushing about adopting more 'AI'. We need to stop giving these people so much attention.
@ajsadauskas great to see it, but I reckon it should be 99% tax on any wealth over $100 million. Imagine slumming it on a mere $100 mil.
@davemosk I haven't been a fan of Peter Beck or RocketLab since this: https://northandsouth.co.nz/2021/03/14/rocket-lab-military/
The sun's out again in Ōtautahi! The local skink community is taking full advantage!
Folks in NZ are starting to realise the implications of the impending EOL of Microsoft Windows 10 for our education system. In its finite wisdom, our MinOfEd has effectively locked all schools into either the use of MS Windows or Google ChromeOS. Both have fundamental issues like endless license […]
Thanks to my recent experience helping @rai on get a #NextCloud + #OnlyOffice instance moved to a new server and fully upgraded and integrated, I've been motivated to update my somewhat obsolete NC + OO tutorial: https://tech.oeru.org/install-nextcloud-hub-and-onlyoffice-ubuntu-2404-docker-compose

Being enjoying a renaissance in disc golf of sorts - have played 5 rounds in the last 2 weeks!

There's a long term pattern of 'ex'-Microsoft people ending up in national gov'ts and other businesses, pushing Microsoft agendas from the inside. One wonders what value might be changing hands. Or if it's even residual Stockholm syndrome. Whatever it is, it's insidious, and the world needs to […]
Wow, every time I hear Peter Griffin on RNZ, I think - whoa, what koolaid has he be drinking. He's completely credulous - Big Tech=Good. I haven't got time for that.
[RNZ new slogan...]
Oh my. 'Be informed, be entertained'? I don't like where that's heading.
@stephen I remember posting some of their automated lamb carcass butchering videos back in late oughties - was pretty cutting edge (so to speak) back in the day...
Whoa, that was a short sharp shock! Biggest in quite a while (but still pretty small) #eqnz Guessing 3.1 but shallow and close.
@stephen ditto. I think you might be being a bit hard on yourself, though 😉 - unless you subscribe to Immanuel Kant, a good person and still find much delight in life.
This interview https://www.rnz.co.nz/national/programmes/morningreport/audio/2019013452/emergency-departments-to-use-ai-consultations-with-patients suggests a fait accompli of 'AI' saturating our healthcare system, with totally cavalier (i.e. ignorant) boosters who have no idea where the data's […]
For the record, I'm pretty sure that no one should care what Bill Gates thinks. He's missed/misjudged every single technological and social leap in the past 30 years. I'm amazed he's made any money at all, but I guess that's what multi-million $ trust funds and a willingness to ruthlessly […]
Wow - #SodiumIonBatteries half the price, 5x the lifespan, performs better from -100C to +70C, and has a higher energy density than LithiumIon & LithiumFP chemistries, with entirely common materials. Also, the manufacturing can use existing battery production lines with minimal retooling […]
Wow, this is a rip-snorting interview with @pluralistic - you, sir, have got great metaphors. Well done. This needs to be on very single NZ MP's listing list: https://www.rnz.co.nz/national/programmes/afternoons/audio/2018985178/feature-interview-how-meta-and-x-will-eat-themselves
@Firesphere heh, maybe it's all a Meta-shareholder-backed manufactured crisis to boost book purchases... or maybe not.
I think Goff's statement was pretty diplomatic, to be honest. And I doubt Trump would've understood it in any case. https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/political/543936/winston-peters-sacks-phil-goff-as-uk-high-commissioner-over-comments-about-donald-trump
I wonder when NZ (and other countries) will have this realisation... https://berthub.eu/articles/posts/you-can-no-longer-base-your-government-and-society-on-us-clouds/
@bitboxer this is my canonical example of why metadata security & privacy totally matter.
Wow, just had a lush ramen bowl at Tanoshi in Ōtautahi. Would eat there again in a split second (although the ramen bows are quite filling). All the other small plates were also delish.
Very cool to see that @joncounts is featured on RNZ this arvo - listening to the podcast shortly! Well done Jon. iNaturalist deserves lots more promotion!
