Mastodon.social is being DDoS right now. That's bad. It was bad when Bluesky was DDoSed. It's bad when open social platforms are attacked.

I had to check if it was real or not: www.nytimes.com/2026/04/03/u...
I am seething with rage. We cannot treat people like this, let alone fucking blind refugees who escaped a literal genocide enabled by US tech companies.
I guess we gotta repeat it for the folks in the back:
I've never seen a project like Blacksky over years of watching social platforms. It's remarkable in many ways.
That Blacksky is out in front on both community and technical leadership is something the Atmosphere is incredibly fortunate to have.
Right now, Dave's voluntary departure from the Washington Post to run his own indie news org sure seems clear eyed and prescient
There's been a lot of chatter over the past few weeks about Bluesky's supposed inadequacies and some gloating from Mastodon users.
Folks should stay focused on the fact that this combat with a bear (Meta) and not tripping up the other person fighting the bear.
Remember when the New York Times said they didn't need a public editor because social media would be sufficient for newsroom accountability?

The challenge with Attie for the builder community isn't the use of AI. It's the question of whether Bluesky begins absorbing/cannibalizing existing ecosystems within the Atmosphere.
Talking with @karenho.bsky.social about <waves> all of this, made me realize the following:
As a 40 something year old, it's fathomable that I can just outlast fascist 78 year old grandpa.
But fascist 53 year old billionaire is an unavoidable problem.
Something I wished people thought about more!
Tomatoes, which seem like a staple of Italian cuisine weren't introduced to Europe until the 1540s!
Potatoes didn't arrive until like the 1570s!
Tomorrow is #bandcampfriday!
I wanna hear your recs! I want to see them fill this feed I created!

TELL US WHAT WE SHOULD CHECK OUT
I've been talking about this for months with others. SaaS products built around data moats are not a thing in the Atmosphere. The whole point is that users data should not be enclosed. This is a space that requires other types of business models.
Rudy is out here very much living "we can just do things" with a "for each other" emphasis.
Strongly endorse this book and series. If you haven't read it, it's very worth it! Accessible, fun, thought provoking, and certainly relevant to our times.
Another problem with TikTok, X & Paramount's acquisitions by right wing extremists means that they literally own our cultural artifacts.
Like the Ellisons own all the copyrights to 60 minutes archives. Elon owns all the URLs for Dril's tweets. He could repoint them to Mein Kampf if he wanted to.
Breakfast posting is the origin of social media and you are betraying the memory of your ancestors if you don't.
This is the real fundamental challenge of the creator journalism age. Journalism outlets are institutions and can bring some fire power to some legal battles, or dissuade moneyed litigants from trying to destroy individual reporters.
Someone just replied to a reddit comment I wrote 19 years ago, and I was able to help solve their problem.
Publications like Mother Jones have had their insurance rates skyrocket because the targets of their investigations have enough money to drag them through multi-year legal processes.
