I wonder this all the time. I think causes of prehistoric human depression was probably pretty similar to ours. Grief, alienation, loss of social connection, rejection (real and imagined), food insecurity, status anxiety, physical pain, disability, loss of agency, brain chemistry.

But the things that are different are the most interesting. Belonging would be very strong (except in cases of ostracism, which were fairly common and often fatal). Would there have been the same feelings of being stuck? Did people have more acceptance given a world without as much inequality?

And then also, there’s the details around the phenomenon. Losing interest in everything and feeling worthless is broad, but the cultural understanding we’ve built around depression is big and complex and there’s a lot of divergence from society to society.
