BookHive — Reading is better together

Track your books, connect with friends, and discover your next favourite read on an open, social platform.

Two new features:

Now, you can track progress on books you are currently reading. I'm using a similar shape to @popfeed.social's book progress tracking, which should make it easier to inter-op in the future.

We've also implemented proper OAuth scopes, which means minimal permissions to your data!

We now support importing books from a Goodreads export!

This allows you to migrate over your books to a platform that respects your data, built on ATProto.

Finally, Apple got around to approving the corresponding mobile app for the BookHive V2 update!

Just landed a major refactor to BookHive, we are now all in on atcute by @mary.my.id, now the server runs on @bun.sh, and a huge refactor to a sane directory structure with @hono.dev

We have a new feature that we are testing out, an XRPC API for getting the identifiers that we know of for a book. This should make it easier to find books in the hive or resolve isbn, isbn13, goodreads ids to hive ids.

This is another step towards making the bookhive dataset even more open

We now export our entire DB weekly on GitHub, this means that anyone looking to run a bookhive instance can do so without having to bootstrap from scratch.

This export does not include any non-public user data, and includes all of the book metadata that we've collected over the years.

Just added more book data scraping to BookHive!

Much more info added, longer book descriptions, author bios, publication details & even genres.

Thanks to @tijs.org we now have author pages, where you can see all the books an author has published (at least the ones we indexed so far)

This represents just the beginning of a series of refactors that I want to make with the BookHive code base. The project started as just an experiment to see if people were interested in Goodreads on ATProto.

Now, it is time to "make it real" and be a proper alternative!

Next up, UI/UX

After a fearsome battle against bots trying to scrape the site & ruining the performance for actual users. The hive has prevailed!

If anyone sees performance issues with the site, please tag me with what you saw!

New app update out!

You can now see your books in a list view from the homepage, with sorting by date added, date read and more

Now, when viewing your own profile page, you'll see a dense table view of all of your books in your hive.

This should allow for easier management of book statuses, after a large import!

Thanks to @tijs.org, we now won't log you out every 15 minutes.

And, more importantly, we now have a "recent buzzes from friends", keep up with any book updates from people you follow on bluesky!

Had to renew the BookHive domain today (I can't believe it has almost been 1 year)

It costed 42 dollars, between that & the Apple Developer subscription it will cost me $150 / year to keep BookHive alive

So, I started a Ko-Fi where you can tip me if you like BookHive & want to see it stick around!

This is huge in terms of data portability, now anyone should be able to build a service like BookHive with this data

Working on getting a submission to the App Store for the BookHive iOS app.

Here is a little sneak peek 😉

I'm not sure what took me so long to implement this, but we now have logins that last for 180 days, and if you use the app within that window, you may never see a login screen again!

We've added a new "Genre explorer", now, you can explore all of the genres of books within the BookHive library.

BookHive's import now shows its progress, and will tell you if anything failed to import.

This should also be efficient enough for some very large imports, try it out at bookhive.buzz
